Group Counselling

I offer in-person group counselling sessions in Vancouver and online sessions. My in-person group counselling sessions are based in East Vancouver and I use the Jane App for online group counselling sessions. I offer group counselling on Understanding Abuse, and Connections.

Understanding Abuse

This is a ten-week group for survivors of domestic abuse and for those interested in learning more about domestic abuse. This group incorporates information shared in When Love Hurts and individuals are encouraged to purchase a copy if possible.

Group norms will be formed with participants and consent forms will either be sent electronically or hard copies will be provided for in-person sessions. Safety will be created for participants and each session will open and close with a check-in with participants.

How Can Couples Counseling Help?

Session 1
The focus of the first session is to go over the group outline with participants, to discuss what is abuse and to share the power and control wheel. Participants will be asked to read a chapter from When Love Hurts.
Session 2
The focus of this session is to determine the cycle of abuse and participants may also wish to consider whether or not they experienced abuse.
Session 3
During this session, we discuss how the abuse impacts an individual
Session 4
This session consists of individuals creating a timeline and identifying when and how the abuse started.
Session 5
This session focuses on who is responsible and reframing some thoughts. Survivors sometimes hold themselves responsible for the abuse they experienced but they are not to blame.
Session 6
During this session, we discuss why perpetrators are abusive.
Session 7
This session focuses on how the abuse a survivor experienced may impact their family. For example, if children witness or hear the perpetrator being abusive to a survivor, this may impact them.
Session 8
During this session, we discuss how to move forward from abuse and we address any feelings of grief and loss.
Session 9
This session focuses on how to avoid an abusive relationship and we spend some time identifying red flags. We also focus on what a healthy relationship looks like.
Session 10
During our final session we share reflections and participants can share what they have learnt. We also discuss the next steps for participants.

Group norms will be formed with participants and consent forms will either be sent electronically or hard copies will be provided for in-person sessions. Safety will be created for participants and each session will open and close with a check-in with participants.
